Rua Garrett is running in east-west direction from the Armazéns do Chiado shopping mall in the east to A Brasileira cafe in the west. The street ends to Largo do Chiado (Chiado Square).
Rua Garrett has always been popular. Writer and poet Fernando Pessoa visited A Brasileira cafe so often that he got a statue on the street near the tables of the cafe. However, the last 15 years of his life he lived in the Campo de Ourique neighborhood.

World’s oldest bookshop which has been in business continuously is Livraria Bertrand. It was founded 1732 by a French bookseller Pedro Faure. In 1742 a new associate joined, a Frenchman Pierre Bertrand. He married Faure’s daughter and Bertrand’s brother also joined the company. After that the company had the name Peter Faure & Bertrand Brothers. Nowadays Livraria Bertrand has 59 branches nationwide.
Another famous old book store is on the other side of the street, Libreria Mondo, in Rua Garrett 100.

And famous Tram 28 stops at Largo do Chiado. By tram you get easily to the other side of the city, to Alfama and its miradouros!
